Margret’s story… 

Margret is a beautiful lady in her 80s who enjoys sitting in the shade of her tree and watching the kids play. She lives in a tiny house in the slum community of Umoja where she single-handedly takes care of her 33-year-old daughter. 

Her daughter is epileptic and has an undiagnosed learning disability which means Margret is her sole carer. However, Margret was living with severe arthritis, meaning that for years she couldn’t work, pay for food or properly take care of her daughter.   In August 2022, we began spending time with Margret, hearing her story and seeing her needs. She joined our Soul & Seed program in March 2023 and has been on a process of healing ever since.   She has received food for the past 8 months, alongside a gas burner which means her daughter can’t fall on the open fire.

She has also excelled in our group therapy and has engaged with deepening her faith, even asking us for a bible in Kikuyu (her mother tongue). Margret also no longer suffers from night terrors and points out that prayer was the solution. 

She has received treatment for her arthritis and continues to take medication, meaning for the first time in years she is pain free. Able to provide for her daughter and take care of herself. Her health insurance will cover her medication and appointments for the next five years.

The local church has agreed to provide her food needs indefinitely and we are so happy to see Margret smiling. We will continue to walk alongside Margret, we are grateful for her kind heart, and we know Umoja will see the transformation that has happened in her life.
